Over 8,000 candidates from Manipur appear for NEET UG 2026; Women record higher success rate nationwide

More than 8,000 candidates from Manipur appeared for the NEET UG 2026 examination, the results of which were declared yesterday by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The state witnessed a smooth conduct of the rescheduled examination held on June 22, with over 8,000 candidates writing the test at 14 centres in Imphal East and Imphal West districts. Another 862 candidates appeared at Churachandpur College, while 201 candidates took the examination at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Chandel.

The exact number of candidates from Manipur who qualified has not yet been released. The Directorate of Health Services (DHS), Manipur, will prepare the state merit list during the counselling process. In NEET UG 2025, a total of 6,116 candidates from the state qualified.

Nationally, the NEET UG 2026 results highlighted the growing academic success of women. More than 58 per cent of all qualified candidates are women, with a qualification rate of 56.8 per cent compared to 55.1 per cent among male candidates.

Commenting on the results, educationist Dr Vijay Garg from Punjab said the performance reflects the increasing participation and excellence of women in competitive examinations. He attributed the trend to greater awareness of girls’ education, improved access to digital learning, scholarships and coaching facilities, as well as the discipline and perseverance displayed by female aspirants.

Dr Garg observed that many successful candidates have overcome financial and social challenges, proving that talent is not limited by gender or background. He said the growing number of women entering medical colleges would strengthen India’s healthcare system by improving gender diversity across medical professions.

While describing the results as encouraging, he noted that the shortage of government medical seats remains a major challenge and stressed the need to expand medical education infrastructure to accommodate more deserving students.
