Meitei, Naga Meira Paibis form apex body

In a significant development amid the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, Meira Paibi organisations representing the Meitei and Naga communities have resolved to come together under a common platform and move towards the formation of a joint apex body to address issues affecting both communities.

The decision was taken during a meeting held at the residence of Ima Usham Amubi, President of Advanced Women Society Apunba Meira Paibi, Awang Sekmai.

Representatives from Meira Paibi organisations of 14 villages—Awang Potsangbam Khullen, Tendongyang, Awang Sekmai, Kanto Sabal, Maharabi, Shantipur, Tingri, Khurkhul, Kanto, Leikinthabi, Makhan Liangmai Village, Kanglatongbi, Mapao and Namdilong Village—attended the meeting.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the representatives alleged that the prolonged conflict has severely affected the long-standing relationship between the neighbouring Meitei and Naga communities. They further alleged that the government’s failure to take timely action had enabled attacks by Kuki groups, resulting in the loss of lives and property belonging to both communities.

The representatives said the common platform was formed to jointly respond to issues affecting the Meitei and Naga communities and to strengthen coordination between the two groups.

They clarified that the platform is currently functioning as a united forum and that a formal apex body will be constituted after further consultations. Additional meetings involving Meira Paibi organisations from both communities will be convened to finalise the organisational structure and future course of action.
