Chiru organisations reject communal interpretation of Bishnupur shooting

Various Chiru civil society organisations have appealed to the public not to communalise the recent shooting incident involving two Chiru youths in Bishnupur district, maintaining that the matter is a criminal case and should not be portrayed as a conflict between communities.

The appeal was made during a joint meeting convened by BAAL Bishnupur and attended by representatives of the Chiru Union, Chiru Coordinating Committee (Women’s Welfare), Nungsai Village, Khoirok Village, Bungte Village and other community leaders.

The organisations expressed concern over the circulation of unverified information and inflammatory content on social media and urged the public to exercise restraint and avoid spreading rumours that could disturb communal harmony.

Speaking at the meeting, Rongmei Naga Council Customary Chairman Rungeisin Thaimei stated that the accused person has already been arrested by Bishnupur Police and that efforts are being made by all concerned to maintain peace and normalcy. He appealed to the public not to project the incident as a Meitei–Naga conflict, stressing that both communities have been working together to preserve harmony and mutual understanding.
BAAL Bishnupur General Secretary Takhellambam Bikram also cautioned against attempts to exploit the incident to incite communal tensions. He urged people to allow the law to take its course and to refrain from actions or statements that could undermine peaceful coexistence among different communities.
