Security forces have intensified coordinated operations in the fringe and vulnerable areas of Kangpokpi, Churachandpur and Thoubal districts under the supervision of Director General of Police (DGP) Mukesh Singh, amid recent incidents of violence and armed activities in the state.
According to sources, large-scale cordon-and-search operations and area domination exercises are being carried out by combined security forces. Security measures have been strengthened with the installation of additional checkpoints and nakas at strategic locations, while extensive combing operations are underway. Arms and ammunition were reportedly recovered from several areas during the operations.
Officials said the DGP is personally overseeing security measures in districts that have witnessed a rise in killings and armed confrontations in recent weeks.
As part of the intensified drive, a major security operation was conducted at Konsakhul (Konsaram) village in Kangpokpi district during the early hours of Wednesday. Local sources said more than 60 security vehicles arrived in and around the village at around 5 a.m., followed by an extensive search operation involving over 150 security personnel.
During the search operation, three village volunteers were reportedly taken into custody for questioning. They were identified as Chalanwangbo Thiumai, Hopeson Abonmai and Namroungwi Chawang.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Henglep Sub-Division of Churachandpur district, a man identified as Lenminsang was reportedly killed during a security operation.
Condemning the incident, Henglep MLA Letzamang Haokip expressed shock over the death of Lenminsang, son of Lenkhogin Haokip, allegedly at the hands of joint security forces in North Songkong village. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the legislator described the incident as deeply disturbing and said the death of a civilian in such circumstances raises serious concerns and undermines public confidence in the security apparatus.
Authorities have not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the reported killing.
