Police destroys nearly 40 kg of seized narcotics

Manipur Police today destroyed nearly 40 kilograms of seized narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances at the SHIJA Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility in Lamdeng, Imphal West, as part of its ongoing anti-drug campaign.

A total of 39.395 kilograms of contraband was disposed of through incineration under the Police Department’s Pre- and Post-Trial Drug Disposal Programme.

The destroyed substances included 4.444 kg of heroin powder, 5.353 kg of brown sugar, 0.422 kg of WY tablets, 2.668 kg of SP capsules and 26.508 kg of ganja.

Speaking on the occasion, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ningshen Worngam said the disposal exercise reflected the commitment of Manipur Police to combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking, which continue to pose serious challenges to communities across the state.

He stated that the seized narcotics were the result of sustained vigilance and coordinated operations carried out by district police units, the Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) wing and other security agencies.

The IGP said the destruction process was conducted at a modern biomedical waste treatment facility to ensure safety, environmental compliance and transparency.

Describing the exercise as both a legal requirement and a social responsibility, Worngam said such measures are essential to preventing seized drugs from re-entering circulation and to protecting future generations from the harmful effects of narcotics.

He also called on the public to continue supporting the fight against drugs and to work collectively towards achieving a drug-free Manipur.

The disposal programme was conducted under the supervision of Manipur Police officials and forms part of the state’s ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking and substance abuse.
