A havildar of the Thoubal Commando unit was stabbed to death during an anti-drug operation at Moijing Khongkok Leingoijin under Thoubal district on Wednesday night. Police have arrested the prime accused in connection with the incident.
According to police sources, the incident occurred at around 8:45 pm when a civil-dressed team of Thoubal Commando personnel was conducting an operation based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of suspected drug traffickers.
The deceased has been identified as Khoirom Suresh Singh (39), son of late Kh. Ibochouba Singh of Yairipok Laimanai. He was serving as a Havildar in the Thoubal Commando unit.
Police said the commando team had intercepted two suspected drug peddlers who were allegedly transporting contraband from the Thoubal Leishangthem area. While the team was attempting to apprehend another suspect in the Moijing Khongkok Leingoijin area, an altercation reportedly broke out. During the scuffle, one of the suspects allegedly attacked Havildar Khoirom Suresh with a knife, inflicting severe injuries.
The injured commando personnel was immediately rushed to District Hospital, Thoubal, but succumbed to his injuries despite efforts to save him.
Police identified the main accused as Md. Naobi alias Md. Tamirjur (27) of Lilong Leingoijin. Another individual allegedly involved in the case has been identified as Md. Salman (30), son of Allaodin, of Moijing Maibam Leikai.
Following the incident, senior officers and additional security personnel rushed to the spot and launched an intensive search operation. Thoubal Superintendent of Police Manoj Prabhakar personally supervised the investigation.
Police arrested the prime accused, Md. Naobi alias Md. Tamirjur, from a hiding place at around 9 am today. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident and the involvement of other persons.
The body of the deceased commando has been sent to the mortuary of JNIMS for post-mortem examination.
