MMTU raises questions over NSU VC appointment amid MU controversy

Amid the ongoing controversy over the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor in-charge at Manipur University, the Meitei Meetei Tribe Union (MMTU) has questioned the legality and transparency of the appointment of retired IPS officer Daljit Singh as Vice-Chancellor of the National Sports University (NSU).
In a statement issued by Takhellambam Parijat Meitei, Secretary Organisation of MMTU, the organisation alleged that the appointment was made in violation of recruitment rules and prescribed qualifications under the NSU Act, 2018.
According to MMTU, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had issued a notification on December 17, 2024 inviting applications for the post. A Selection Committee reportedly shortlisted 15 qualified candidates, while 14 candidates appeared for the viva voce examination held on May 31, 2025 at the conference hall of the National Dope Testing Laboratory in Delhi.
The organisation alleged that Daljit Singh neither appeared in the screening list nor participated in the viva voce process. MMTU further claimed that the NSU Act requires a Vice-Chancellor to possess at least 10 years’ experience as a Professor along with academic research and administrative experience. It alleged that Daljit Singh, who holds B.Sc. and LL.B qualifications and served in police and paramilitary organisations including the BSF and CRPF, did not fulfil the prescribed academic criteria.
MMTU also questioned how the earlier selection panel was allegedly cancelled without any public notification or fresh advertisement, describing the appointment as resembling a “political appointment” rather than a transparent academic selection process.
The organisation warned that alleged disregard for rule of law and institutional integrity in premier educational institutions could seriously damage their credibility and future.
