MAYOL calls on voters to reject money power, support ethical politics

The Manipur Youth League, popularly known as MAYOL, today launched a year-long public awareness campaign titled “Politics: Anouba Laang-On Gi Vote (Vote for National Regeneration)” at the Manipur University Auditorium Hall, in collaboration with the Manipur University Students’ Union.
The campaign was formally inaugurated during a programme attended by academicians, civil society representatives, student leaders, and social activists. Addressing the gathering, Manipur Youth League President Asem Prince appealed to voters to reject the influence of money power in elections and instead support deserving and capable candidates to protect democratic values and strengthen governance.
Asem Prince said the campaign, jointly organised by Manipur Youth League and the Manipur University Students’ Union, will continue for one year and focus on promoting ethical political practices and responsible use of the franchise. He observed that the future of the state depends on the election of honest and competent leaders rather than those who attempt to secure votes through monetary inducements.
He further stated that the practice of selling votes for short-term personal benefit has contributed to corruption, poor governance, and the erosion of public trust in democratic institutions. Urging citizens to exercise their voting rights with awareness and responsibility, he said informed and value-based participation in the electoral process is essential for meaningful political change.
The inaugural programme was attended by former Head of the Department of Anthropology, Manipur University, Professor W Nabakumar; Editors’ Guild Manipur Secretary General Yumnam Rupachandra; and Manipur University Students’ Union Vice-President Hijios Tongbram, who served as presidium members.
During the function, Asem Prince added that the campaign aims to create greater public awareness, particularly among young voters, about ethical political participation at a time when politics has increasingly drifted away from the aspirations of the people. He said the initiative seeks to reconnect politics with public interest and social responsibility.
A booklet outlining the objectives and vision of the campaign was released by the presidium members on the occasion. The programme was also attended by several prominent personalities, including retired Sessions Judge Aribam Noutuneshwari, Mao Union Imphal President Puni Losii, socio-political commentator Chongtham Bijoy, retired IAS officer Dr R K Nimai, social scientist Dr Dhanabir Laishram, cultural activist Narendra Ningomba, Imphal Naga Forum Publicity Secretary Honpoo Shimray, and Dr Syed Ahmed, Associate Professor of Dhanamanjuri University. The speakers shared their views on the need for ethical politics, informed voting, and greater civic engagement to strengthen democracy in Manipur.
