In a significant political move, BJP MLA Th. Shyamkumar today warned that he and his colleagues would resign if the central BJP leadership fails to grant them an appointment and heed their plea. Speaking to reporters at Imphal Airport before departing for New Delhi, he said, “If the central leadership does not give an appointment, there is no need to remain as BJP MLAs, and resignation is the only option.”
The development comes as part of a broader strategy by the party to press for the formation of a new government in Manipur, which has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025, following months of ethnic violence. A delegation of BJP legislators, led by former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, is already camping in Delhi. The team includes H. Dingo, T. Robindro, S. Ranjan, Govindas Konthoujam, and Hill Areas Committee chairman Dinganglung Gangmei.
Joining the delegation today are BJP MLAs Yumnam Khemchand, U. Deben, and Th. Shyamkumar, signaling an intensified push to urge the central leadership for early government formation.
Before his departure to New Delhi yesterday, N. Biren Singh stated that the delegation aims to meet top leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President J.P. Nadda, and potentially Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to discuss the political crisis and address the plight of internally displaced persons.
Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Th. Satyabrata Singh is also expected to leave Imphal for New Delhi at around 5 pm by an Air India Express Flight.
With the Assembly under suspended animation but not dissolved, BJP MLAs see an opportunity to restore a democratically elected government. Their move underscores mounting urgency within the party to re-establish governance, stabilize the state, and influence the central leadership’s response, which will shape the next chapter in Manipur’s political landscape.
