Since being designated as a district in 2016, Jiribam has made significant step in progress for establishing its identity and governance. However, the absence of essential offices such as the District Transport Office (DTO) continues to be a pressing concern for the growth and efficiency of the district.
The establishment of Jiribam as a district was seen as a landmark decision, as the district plays a vital role being a western gateway of Manipur. On that momentous day of destined the status of Jiribam District, locals alike celebrated this move, anticipating improvement in infrastructure, public services and economic development.
However, nearly a decade later, the lack of a DTO office has raised questions about the efficacy of transportation services in the region. Due to absence of a DTO office in Jiribam, a significant number of vehicles on the road of Jiribam are registered in Assam. It is clear that the lack of a DTO office in Jiribam is forcing residents to seek services across State lines. Without a dedicated DTO, residents face challenges in vehicle registration, licensing, and road safety initiatives.
This not only leads to revenue being funneled into Assam’s coffers but also contributes to a sense of disconnection for Jiribam’s residents from their own state.
The Civil Society Organisations of Jiribam have frequently vocal about the need for these office to be established.
The demand is not just about administrative convenience, it’s about empowering and ensuring that the benefits of district status are fully realised.
As Jiribam continues its journey as a district, the hope remains that the government will heed the calls of Jiribam populace for establishing these essential offices, paving the way for a brighter and more connected future for its residents.
