The Union government has appointed Justice M. Sundar of the Madras High Court as the new Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, following the retirement of Chief Justice Kempaiah Somashekar on September 14. The appointment was cleared on September 13 after the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointment in a post on X, stating that the President of India approved Justice Sundar’s elevation in consultation with the Chief Justice of India. Justice Sundar will assume charge once he takes oath.
The Supreme Court Collegium, in its resolution passed on September 11, had recommended Justice Sundar’s name for the position. Justice Soumen Sen of the Calcutta High Court was recommended as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, while Justice Pavankumar B. Bajanthri, currently Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, was recommended as its regular Chief Justice.
Born on July 19, 1966, in Chennai, Justice Sundar graduated from Madras Law College as part of the first batch of the five-year integrated law course and enrolled as an advocate in 1989. He practiced extensively in the Madras High Court, focusing on civil matters, and also served as Standing Counsel for the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board between 2003 and 2006.
Justice Sundar was appointed as a permanent judge of the Madras High Court on October 5, 2016.
