NSS Cell, organized “Sunday on Cycle” as part of the National Sports Day 2025 celebrations

The Department of Physical Education and Sports Science (PESS), Manipur University, Canchipur, in collaboration with the Fit India Campaign Committee, Fit India Club, and the National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, organized the “Sunday on Cycle” event today as part of the National Sports Day 2025 celebrations. The programme, held under the national theme “Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein!” and supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Ministry of Higher Education, began at 7:30 a.m. from the Traffic Island of Manipur University.
The event was attended by Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Olympian and Arjuna Awardee Ngangbam Soniya Devi Chanu, Registrar Prof. M. Premjit Singh, Head of PESS Prof. L. Thambal Singh, Controller of Examinations T. Shantikumar Singh, and Dean of Students’ Welfare Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh. NSS volunteers felicitated the dignitaries, and a memento was presented to Olympian Soniya Devi in recognition of her achievements. The programme also included a symbolic plant-watering activity to promote environmental sustainability.
NSS Programme Coordinator Dr. Laishram Santosh Singh delivered the welcome address, noting that “Sunday on Cycle” is a national initiative launched in 2024 to combat obesity and encourage cycling as a healthy and eco-friendly practice. Prof. Premjit Singh highlighted the importance of fitness for both physical and mental well-being, while Soniya Devi called for wider public support to strengthen India’s presence in sports at the global level.
Vice-Chancellor Lokendra Singh emphasized that health is central to building a prosperous nation and urged collective efforts toward making Manipur University a plastic-free campus. Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh stressed the need for holistic health covering physical, mental, social, and spiritual dimensions.
The cycling rally was flagged off by Controller of Examinations T. Shantikumar Singh, with the Vice-Chancellor leading over 200 participants, including faculty, students, and cycling enthusiasts. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Laishram Santosh Singh.
