New Delhi, July 30:
Union Home Minister Amit Shah today moved a statutory resolution in the Lok Sabha, seeking parliamentary approval for extending President’s Rule in Manipur for an additional six months. The resolution refers to the Proclamation issued on February 13, 2025, under Article 356 of the Constitution, placing the violence-hit state under central rule.
If approved by both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the extension will keep President’s Rule in force until February 13, 2026.
While presenting the motion, Amit Shah stated:
“That this House approves the continuance in force of the Proclamation, dated the 13th February, 2025 in respect of Manipur, issued under article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from 13th August, 2025.”
The motion appears on the official List of Business in the Lok Sabha, and reiterates the Centre’s stance that governance in Manipur remains severely disrupted due to ongoing ethnic tensions and administrative instability.
Earlier, on July 25, the same resolution was admitted in the Rajya Sabha, where Shah had similarly urged for an extension, citing the fragile law-and-order situation. The Rajya Sabha Parliamentary Bulletin echoed the resolution’s wording, reinforcing the government’s assessment that normalcy is yet to return.
The imposition of President’s Rule in February followed a report submitted by the Manipur Governor to President Droupadi Murmu, amid widespread violence and the resignation of the then Chief Minister. The state has remained under central administration since.
