Kangpokpi, June 20:
Thousands of mourners formed a human chain along National Highway-2 on Thursday night as the body of Lamnunthem Singson, locally known as Neonu, arrived in Kangpokpi town. Singson, who tragically lost her life in the recent Air India crash while serving in her professional capacity, was brought home at around 9:20 pm.
The Kangpokpi Town Committee organised a candlelight vigil stretching from downtown Kangpokpi to Ngambom Veng, Ward No. 8, where she resided. Holding candles and standing in solemn silence, residents from across age groups paid tribute as the funeral convoy made its way through the town.
At her residence, representatives of the Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills and Kuki Women Union Sadar Hills performed traditional rites, including draping a ceremonial shawl over her coffin. Floral tributes and condolence messages were also offered by several organisations, such as the Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organisation and Kangpokpi Youth Union.
Kaipu Kipgen, Singson’s uncle, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the many individuals and groups who helped bring her body home. He especially acknowledged the support from the people of Nagaland, the Naga and Kuki communities, Nagaland Police, and the Eimi Riders Nagaland, who escorted the funeral convoy from Dimapur Airport.
“We are deeply touched and forever grateful,” Kipgen said, also extending thanks to the Naga People’s Organisation and residents of Senapati district for their solidarity and support.
The Thadou Baptist Association, Kangpokpi, along with the local ward committee, held an overnight vigil filled with hymns and prayers. Community members stood vigil throughout the night in a moving show of collective mourning.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin at 11:00 am today, with the burial planned for the afternoon at the town cemetery. The outpouring of grief and unity among residents reflects Singson’s high standing in the community and the deep sorrow felt across the region.
Local authorities, in coordination with civil society groups, managed the large turnout to ensure the ceremonies proceeded in an orderly and respectful manner. The overwhelming community response has underlined a profound sense of loss and unity in Kangpokpi.
