The All Assam Manipuri Meira Paibi Apunba Lup (AAMMPAL) has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of its former president, Ema Ingudam (Onbi) Sanathoi Devi, who passed away on June 2 at the age of 77. A resident of Joypur Part 2 in Cachar district, Ema Sanathoi was widely respected for her lifelong dedication to social service, the welfare of Manipuri people in Assam, and women’s empowerment.
AAMMPAL, along with a wide coalition of organizations—AMKIL, Nupi Samaj, Tammi Chingmi, MACHA LEIMA, EECHAL, NLANL, NIMPAL, Thoubal Ima, ANUL, EEVFAM, Khwairamband Keithel Semgat Sagat Lup, Phouoibi Ima Keithel Women’s Vendors Welfare Union, Paona Keithel Women’s Welfare Organisation, UPF, NIPCO, CADA, MAPI Council, AMPFA, and AMSU—jointly conveyed their condolences and paid tribute to her legacy.
Throughout her life, Ema Sanathoi remained at the forefront of various social and cultural movements. She was actively involved in efforts to include the Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, participating in significant advocacy campaigns, including a movement in Delhi.
She also played a prominent role in the historic Manipur Levy 2008 “The Spirit of Freedom” march from Silchar to Imphal. Her contributions to the observance of the Great June Uprising and Unity Day as a delegate from Assam further cemented her status as a respected activist who stood unwaveringly for justice and communal harmony.
In recognition of her distinguished service, the Manipur Sahitya Parishad, Assam has announced its decision to commemorate her contributions.
Her final written message, described as deeply heartfelt, resonated with many and captured the emotional struggles of the Manipuri community in Assam. Ema Sanathoi’s unwavering commitment and compassionate leadership will continue to inspire generations to come.
