The Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) today observed May 18 as Meetei Mayek Revival Day to commemorate the historic movement for the revival of the indigenous Meetei script in Manipur.
The main observance was held at MEELAL’s Headquarters in Imphal, where floral tributes were offered to the pioneers of the script movement, particularly the organization’s founding president, Chingsubam Akaba. A one-minute silence was also observed in his honour.
MEELAL President Khaidem Ingocha, Secretary General Langoijam Nongmailembi, President Kongkham Kiran, and other key members addressed the gathering, highlighting the significance of May 18, 2005, when the government officially adopted Meetei Mayek in the state’s education system. Since then, the script has been integrated from Class I to higher education levels.
More than 500 volunteers participated in a commemorative rally aimed at promoting awareness about the use of Meetei Mayek in daily life. MEELAL also launched educational initiatives such as the “EE LAIRIK” cursive books to support Meetei Mayek literacy.
The event also saw the participation of representatives from HERICOUN and other civil society groups, who reaffirmed their support for the continued revival of the indigenous script.
MEELAL announced plans to intensify outreach efforts across Manipur and among Manipuri communities in Assam and Tripura. The organisation is also promoting the use of Meetei Mayek in signboards, banners, and advertisements to encourage wider public use.
The observance concluded with a strong message urging the people of Manipur to preserve their linguistic heritage by embracing Meetei Mayek, reinforcing MEELAL’s commitment to language revival as a cultural responsibility.
