ASUK declares total shutdown in Manipur on October 15

Imphal, Oct 12:

The Alliance for Socialist Unity, Kangleipak (ASUK) has called for a total shutdown across Manipur on October 15, marking the day as “Amamba Numit” (Black Day). The shutdown aims to protest historical injustices, political marginalization, and human rights violations experienced under Indian rule.
In its press release, ASUK stated that October 15 symbolizes the forced integration of Manipur into India, reducing the region to a Part-C state and stripping it of its sovereignty. The group described this status as an act of dehumanization, comparing it to colonial subjugation. ASUK cited the neglect of Manipur’s cultural and political heritage as one of the main grievances.
The organization also condemned the imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) across the state, describing it as a tool of oppression that has caused widespread suffering. They pointed out that Manipur’s people have been subjected to militarization, arbitrary arrests, and other human rights abuses. “Manipur has been treated as a testing ground for oppressive policies,” the release asserted.
ASUK emphasized that the shutdown is intended to unite the people against systemic exploitation and to demand proper recognition of Manipur’s historical and political significance. The organization stressed the need for solidarity, urging all sections of society to support the protest peacefully.
The total shutdown will affect all non-essential activities, including markets, transport, and public offices. However, essential services such as healthcare, electricity, and water supply will remain unaffected to avoid inconvenience to the public.
ASUK concluded by stating that the shutdown serves as a reminder of Manipur’s struggle for dignity and identity, calling for continued resistance against policies that undermine the state’s autonomy.
