Breach of Imphal River bank caused by neglect, says social activist Romen

Imphal, July 5:

Oinam Romen Singh, a social activist from the Singjamei Assembly Constituency, has attributed the recent breach of the Imphal River bank at Singjamei Oinam Thingel to the failure of authorities to heed public warnings. The breach, which occurred at midnight between July 2nd and 3rd, could have been prevented, he asserted.
During a briefing at the embankment site, Oinam Romen explained that the construction of the Singjamei Water Supply Scheme’s Intake Station four years ago involved extensive excavation of mud, but the embankment was not properly repaired afterward. The retaining wall was built with bricks instead of concrete, and its width was only ten inches over a length of one hundred meters, which he deemed insufficient for protection.
Oinam Romen highlighted that residents had repeatedly complained to the authorities about the need for proper restoration, especially before the onset of the current rainy season. Their concerns were ignored, leading to the embankment’s failure. The resulting flood has affected not only the Singjamei Assembly Constituency but also the neighboring Thongju and Langthabal constituencies.
In response to media queries, he confirmed that the embankment’s immediate restoration has halted the water flow from the river temporarily. However, he emphasized the need for a long-term solution to ensure proper and lasting restoration. He also expressed gratitude to the volunteers who assisted in the temporary restoration efforts, preventing further suffering for the affected communities.
