Imphal, May 28:
In the face of incessant rains and the looming threat of the severe cyclonic storm ‘REMAL’ hitting Manipur for the second time this month, the Manipur government, through respective district administrations, has issued a stern warning urging citizens to take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and properties.
The advisory comes as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an ‘orange alert’ for the entire state of Manipur in its latest weather bulletin, signaling the imminent danger posed by the cyclonic conditions.
The government’s advisory encompasses a range of safety measures aimed at minimizing risks posed by the cyclonic storm. Key recommendations include:
Avoiding Exposure to Lightning: Citizens are advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms and seek shelter in sturdy buildings or vehicles with closed windows. The 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule is emphasized, urging individuals to retreat indoors if they cannot count to 30 between seeing lightning and hearing thunder.
Safety Precautions Outdoors: Those caught outside during a thunderstorm are advised to move away from elevated areas and bodies of water, seek low-lying shelter, and refrain from taking shelter under trees or near utility lines. The importance of avoiding contact with metal objects is underscored to minimize the risk of lightning strikes.
Indoor Safety Measures: Indoors, precautions include closing windows and doors, unplugging electronic appliances, and avoiding contact with water and metal surfaces. Special attention is urged for vulnerable groups such as infants, children, the elderly, and those with special needs.
Traveling Safely: Travel during thunderstorms is strongly discouraged, with recommendations to postpone trips or seek safe shelter if caught outdoors. Open vehicles and structures are to be avoided, and precautions should be taken while boating or swimming.
First Aid and Agriculture Safety: Guidance on administering first aid to lightning strike victims and safety precautions for agriculture activities during thunderstorms are also provided, emphasizing the importance of seeking medical assistance promptly and taking measures to protect crops and livestock.
The government further advises residents to stay informed through local media channels for updates and instructions, as access to certain areas may be restricted due to the severe weather conditions.
Authorities urge strict adherence to these precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impact of the cyclonic storm ‘REMAL’ and ensure the safety and well-being of the public. Citizens are encouraged to report any emergencies or incidents promptly to relevant authorities for assistance.
