PMO intervene commissioning of Mapithel Dam

Imphal, Aug 31: Prime Minister Office (PMO) has sought reasonable clarification regarding Mapithel Dam which is scheduled to inaugurate on September 2, this year.
A highly reliable source said that in the regard the Union Ministry of power has directed the state government to stop the commissioning of Mapithel Dam. The directives comes a complaint by one Shivani Choudhary, executive director of housing and land rights network Delhi.
In the compliant to the PMO it is stated that the force commissioning of Mapithel Dam as it would amount to violation of human rights of the people residing at the close proximity of the area as well as it would impact the free flow of Thoubal River.
The complaint also urged  to resume the expert review committee formed in 2008 and address all pending rehabilitation and resettlement, and other issues related to impacts of the Mapithel dam as per the finding of the ERC prior to commissioning of the project.
Another serious allegation to the Manipur Government mentioned by the complainant is the failure of the various mega Dam in the state. The PMO was urged to review and investigate the failure and under performance  of all commissioned mega dams in Manipur such as the Khuga Multipurpose hydroelectric project, the Khoupum dam, the Singda multipurpose hydroelectric project and the Loktak multipurpose hydroelectric project and implement the 2009 recommendations of the UN special Rapporteur given on the Mapithel dam.
