State government’ s silence to the issue of Manipur College seems to intentional for reason best known to them. The college had stopped receiving aids from the University Grant Commission (UGC) since 2014. It was blacklisted, after the then in-charge principal of that time had misappropriated UGCs fund. On pressure from the UGC the State Education department of Higher Education had forced the in-charge P rincipal of that time to return the amount misappropriated by him along with interest. But other than recovering the amount, no punitive action was taken up against the-incharge principal. This was seriously taken by the UGC and as a result the College is still blacklisted and request from the State Higher Education department to lift the ban has not been considered. The denial by the UGC for lifting of ban requested by the State Higher Education department is an insult not only to the department but also to the whole of the state government. It is a direct insult to the credibility of the state government which is committed to eradicate all form of corruption from the state. With the ban still on, the college had stopped receiving any sort of financial aids from the UGC. Developmental works which were supposed to be taken up for the welfare of the students of this college could not be taken up, even though the teaching community of this college continues to get their monthly salary . The then in-charge principal which had ruined the fate of this college continues as a professor and still enjoys the salary provided by the state government. With the new government under the chief minister N. Biren Singh working for a change, much appreciations is received to his government particularly the State Education Minister Th, Radheshyam for his effort to clean the mess in the education sector . Almost all sections of people who want to see change and improve the education sector applause the kind of good work taken up by the School Education department Director . The tracing of fraud teachers and immediate punitive action against such teachers once more implanted some hopes to the people of the state who desperately wanted to improve the education sector in the state. Saying so there are still many things left to be done to correct and streamline the education sector at both primary and secondary level. When things seem to be going on the right direction for primary and higher secondary education, the college education sector seems to be left out. The issue of the Manipur College should be taken seriously . It is about the fate of many students who are studying in this college. Without proper aids from the UGC, there is no means that the college could take up measures for improvement of the students. Imphal Times in its January 11, 2018 issue had tried to draw the attention of the state government as well the state education Minister by reporting on how and why the college has been blacklisted. To the surprise instead of getting response from the concern state government authority , one student body called Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA) staged protest on January 22, 2018, urging the state authority to approach the UGC for lifting of the ban. For reason best known, the State Education Department is ignoring this very issue of the Manipur College. Imphal Times now question the state government authority about the reason for ignoring the issue of this college? What force protects the in-charge principal from taking up any action for the misappropriation of fund? Why no word comes out from the government on this issue? Or is the government trying to close down the one time premier college of the state.
