Manipur’s young athletes who participated in the 7th Khelo India Youth Games 2025, held in Bihar and New Delhi from May 4 to 15, were warmly welcomed upon their return for bringing home medals and pride to the state. The prestigious event was organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The 12-day national event featured 27 sporting disciplines and saw participation from 5,286 top athletes representing various states and union territories. Manipur delivered a remarkable performance, finishing 9th in the overall medal tally with a total of 30 medals — 11 gold, 8 silver, and 11 bronze.
Upon their arrival at Imphal International Airport, the athletes—both boys and girls—along with their officials, were greeted with flower garlands and cheers from well-wishers and supporters, reflecting the state’s appreciation and encouragement.
In lawn tennis, Shanker Heisnam, the sole participant from Manipur, emerged as the champion, clinching a gold medal. His achievement was celebrated by the Manipur Tennis Association, Imphal District Tennis Association, ATL, SEYO, THAU, and members of his locality. Speaking after his victory, Shanker expressed that it was his first time representing Manipur in the Khelo India Youth Games final and described the win as an emotional and proud moment. He recalled starting tennis in 2014 and extended heartfelt thanks to his coach, parents, and mentors, crediting them for his success. He dedicated his medal to the people of Manipur, saying their blessings and support were his strength.
Manipur’s success extended to multiple sports -Sepaktakraw: 4 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze (6 medals), Thang Ta: 3 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze (7 medals), Judo: 1 gold, 5 silver, 1 bronze (7 medals), Weightlifting, Boxing, Lawn Tennis: 1 gold each, Fencing: 3 silver, 5 bronze (8 medals), Cycling: 1 silver, 1 bronze (2 medals), Football: 1 bronze.
