A One-Day School Students’ Sensitization Program was successfully held today at Ideal School, Thanga Khoirom Hillock, as part of Sangai Day observance. The program began at 11:13 a.m. and was jointly organized by the Sangai First Foundation and Ideal School, drawing active participation from 85 students, teachers, parents, and community members.
Presiding over the event were Dr. Khangembam Shamungou, Managing Trustee of Sangai First Foundation; Kumam Jugeshor, Trustee; Salam Brajakumar, Vice-President of Environmental Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum; and Tongbram Brojen, Principal of Ideal School.
Assistant Teacher Laishram Krishnakanta delivered the welcome address, setting the tone for the day. In his keynote speech, Kumam Jugeshor underscored the ecological, cultural, and economic value of the endangered Sangai deer and stressed the need for student-led conservation initiatives.
Dr. Khangembam Shamungou presented a detailed insight into the challenges facing Sangai conservation, highlighting threats to its unique habitat at Keibul Lamjao Floating National Park. He raised concerns over the environmental impact of the Ithai Barrage on Loktak Lake’s ecosystem.
Adding youthful inspiration to the event, Ningthoujam Lanchenbi, a Class IX student from Chingmei High School, shared her personal and community-based conservation efforts, earning heartfelt applause.
A spot quiz contest on Sangai and wildlife saw the enthusiastic participation of 70 students. Twelve winners were selected, with awards to be presented during the 2nd Sangai Day celebration on December 10, 2025. Wildlife books authored by Dr. Shamungou were donated to the school library to aid student learning.
Principal Tongbram Brojen extended gratitude to all participants and concluded the program with a collective pledge to protect the Sangai and promote sustainable environmental practices. The next host school for the sensitization program will be announced soon.
