The Lions Club of Imphal observed United Nations Day, 2024, at its Service Centre in Sangaiprou, where members honored the UN’s founding members with floral tributes. The event saw attendance from key figures including Club President Lion O. Ranjit, PMJF Lion Dr. W. Gopimohan, PDG, and MJF Lion H. Manikumar, among others.
In a keynote address, Lion Th. Imomacha Singh recounted the UN’s origins, explaining how the League of Nations’ failure to prevent World War II spurred the formation of a new global body. Singh noted that U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt coined the term “United Nations” in 1942, leading to the UN’s establishment on October 24, 1945, with the Lions Association among the non-governmental organizations that contributed to drafting the UN Charter.
Following the commemoration, the Club held its 32nd State-Level Debating Competition for students, an annual initiative. The debate topic for this year was, “Enigmatically, Manipur has been embroiled in ethnic strife. The intervention of the United Nations Human Rights Council must now be a watershed of normalcy in the state.” Maria Montessori School won the team championship trophy, while DM College of Arts secured the runner-up position. Individually, Hijam Pritam Meitei from DM College of Arts took first prize, with Thoihenbi Maibam of Maria Montessori School and Ria Tongbram from Camps’ English Academy earning second and third places. Consolation prizes were awarded to Niranika Senjam of Maria Montessori School and Alina Khundongbam of JNV Khumbong.
The debate was chaired by Prof. Chinglen Maisnam, Head of South East Asia Studies at Manipur University. The judging panel included Dr. Premananda Yumnam, Head of the Department of Law; Dr. Sapam Dilip, Assistant Professor in the Department of Law; and Dr. T. Deepamanjuri Devi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology.
