Imphal, Oct 29:
A one-day Capacity Building Programme on Scientific Livestock and Poultry Management, under the NICRA Project, was held today at the Conference Hall of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Chandel. The program aimed to equip farmers with scientific practices to improve livestock management and adapt to changing climate conditions.
In his keynote address, Dr. Kangjam Sonamani Singh, Nodal Officer for the NICRA Project, highlighted the importance of integrating livestock into the farming system, especially in the hills and foothills of the region. He emphasized that while animal rearing has been a long-standing tradition in Chandel, it is crucial to adopt climate-resilient breeds and advanced methods to counter the risks posed by climate change and disease outbreaks. He also urged farmers to explore livestock as an additional income source beyond conventional crops, given the district’s proximity to the international border.
Dr. A. Ameeta Devi, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Chandel, stressed the importance of timely vaccinations for profitable livestock farming. She noted that sustainable poultry and piggery farming is essential for tribal households, where meat plays a central role in the diet. Dr. Devi also advised farmers to maintain clean, well-ventilated animal shelters and use feed supplements, vitamins, and minerals to improve productivity.
