Imphal, Sept 18:
The President of the Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA), Priyokumar, has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the Manipur state government’s decision to swiftly regularize alcohol while neglecting to address the ongoing state crisis.
Speaking at CADA’s 18th Foundation Day event, held at the organization’s office in Poreiromba Khongnangkhong, Imphal East, Priyokumar condemned the government’s prioritization of alcohol regulation, contrasting it with the prolonged discussions on resolving the crisis. “It takes no time for passing regularization of alchohol but it takes years to discuss the ongoing issue”, Priyokumar said.
CADA, which has been actively campaigning against the use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco since its inception in 2006, has faced challenges in intensifying its efforts due to the current turmoil in the state. Priyokumar stressed that diverting attention to other issues during the crisis would be counterproductive. He expressed serious concern over the rising drug and alcohol abuse, warning that immediate action is needed to protect the future of Manipur’s youth.
Drawing comparisons to the devastating impact of the opium wars on China, Priyokumar emphasized the importance of shielding the younger generation from alcohol. He assured that CADA’s anti-drug and alcohol campaigns would resume with renewed vigor once the crisis subsides.
The foundation day event was attended by several prominent figures, including UCM President YK Dhiren, UPF President N Rupachandra, and NIPCO President O Premjit, all of whom expressed solidarity with CADA’s mission to combat the growing menace of intoxicants in Manipur.
