5th Rongmei Freshers’ Meet cum Cultural Day 2024 celebrates community spirit and cultural pride in New Delhi

The 5th Rongmei Freshers’ Meet cum Cultural Day 2024 took place on October 26 at Grih Kalyan Kendra, Laxmi Bai Nagar, New Delhi. Organized by the Rongmei Phwam Delhi (RPD) and Rongmei Chamnac Phwam Delhi (RCPD), the event attracted approximately 1,500 participants, including Rongmei freshers, community members, and distinguished guests. This year’s theme, “Excellence and Self-Reliance,” aimed to promote cultural pride, unity, and achievement within the community.
The event commenced with a lively session featuring Huay Kauhmei, where participants joyfully pronounced “Ho-Ho-Ho” in a geometrical pattern. This was followed by MaiLapmei, a traditional fire-making method performed by Pouning Panmei and Gaizingam Rwangmei, an executive member of RCPD. The audience joined in singing the Rongmei Anthem in a display of unity, before Levi Thaimei, the Chairman of RPD and Program Convener, delivered the Welcome Speech. The first session continued with a captivating Rongmei Cultural Dance presented by the Rongmei Women Cultural Dance Troupe Delhi NCR, showcasing the rich heritage of the Rongmei people. Freshers were warmly welcomed into the community with a special introduction and gifts.
Attendees had the opportunity to hear from resource person Gaikhonlung Panmei, IRS, Joint Commissioner, GST & Customs, Ministry of Finance, who offered valuable insights into personal and professional development. Additionally, D. Thongongthui, Managing Director of United Builders India, delivered a keynote speech on entrepreneurship. The session was further enriched by a soulful performance of traditional Rongmei folk songs by Dimkulung Pamei, Sports & Cultural Secretary of RPD, which resonated with the audience and reflected the cultural legacy of the Rongmei people.
The first session concluded with a special performance from renowned Rongmei artiste Langunthai Daimei, highlighting the musical heritage of the Rongmei community. Awards for Best Rongmei Traditional Attire were presented to Susanna Gonmei and Bruce Kamei in the Children’s category, while Kazailiu Malingmei and Thuanreilung Pamei received awards in the Adult category.
The second session opened with special songs from Rongmei artistes Gaithailiu Gonmei, Lankhuingam Rongmei John, and Gugu Ruangmei. The event also featured a Top 10 Freshers’ Finalists competition, culminating in the crowning of Gaingamei Thaimei and Lulu Kamei as Mister and Miss Freshers 2024. The esteemed panel of judges included Peichun Gangmei, Lucas L Kamsuan, Dr. Janailung Francis Kamei, and Singsing Panmei.
The Rongmei Achievers Award 2024 recognized outstanding individuals from the Rongmei community for their exceptional contributions in various fields, such as entrepreneurship, academics, and social work. Awardees included Henry Kaphunjok in the Entrepreneur category, and Pouning Panmei in the Private Company category. Dr. Janailung Kamei Francis, Dr. Kungreiliu Panmei, Dr. P. Lanbiliu, and Dr. Gaidimlung K Jacob were honored in the PhD category, while Dr. Marim Joice Gonmei received recognition in the Postdoctoral category. Purnima Kamei, Ningthuigong Kamei, and Kadaguang Malangmei were awarded in the Postgraduate category, and Dingogailiu R Panmei was recognized in the Undergraduate category. Additionally, a special honor was given to the Rongmei Nurses Delhi & NCR under the Social Work category for their dedication to community service.
The introduction of RPD and RCPD executives and advisors aimed to foster a stronger connection with the public and enhance community engagement. A highlight of the day included an exciting Men’s Body Show, led by K. Rajuaklung Rongmei, where Khangamlung Kamei was crowned the winner, followed by Suamthaulung Panmei as the 1st Runner-Up and Namsinlung Amos Kamei as the 2nd Runner-Up.
The Rongmei Cultural Show, featuring Gaipuangliu Gonmei and Lujianliu R Panmei as show-stoppers, celebrated the elegance of Rongmei traditional attire. The event culminated in a musical concert by renowned Rongmei singer Langunthai Daimei, which fostered a sense of unity and cultural pride, followed by traditional Pazeihmei songs and dances involving all attendees.
The event was co-sponsored by several organizations, including United Builders India, Christian Heritage, Ben Northeast Tour and Travel, and Makaam Hospital & Research Institute, reflecting the Rongmei community’s commitment to cultural pride and unity. Individual co-sponsors also contributed significantly, with Daisinlung Meiringmei funding the Rongmei Achievers Awards 2024 and Dimchuilung Gangmei sponsoring the Dance Troupe and Media Team.
The event was expertly documented by Frame Story Production, serving as the official photographer and videographer, ensuring that the day’s vibrant moments were beautifully captured. The organizing committee, led by Levi Thaimei and Mathiuduan Kahmei, expressed their gratitude to all participants, community leaders, and sponsors for their generous support, which made the event a resounding success. The event concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks delivered by Mathiuduan Kahmei, reaffirming the strength of the Rongmei community in Delhi, NCR, and beyond, as they embraced a collective journey of cultural pride and self-reliance.
