World Wetlands Day 2025 observed with calls for preservation and development

World Wetlands Day 2025 was commemorated in Manipur at Leishang Hiden, Canchipur, with a significant event aimed at raising awareness about the importance of wetland conservation. The celebration, organized by the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Government of Manipur, aligned with the UN theme “Protecting Wetlands for our Common Future.”
Chief Minister N. Biren, who attended the event, appealed to the public to recognize the vital role that nature, especially wetlands, plays in maintaining the ecological balance. He emphasized the urgency of preserving these water bodies, underscoring their importance in sustaining the state’s environment.
In his speech, Chief Minister Biren discussed ongoing efforts to protect and revitalize water bodies in the state, mentioning initiatives in Yarakpat and Lamphelpat, where efforts are underway to preserve and restore local water resources. He further highlighted legal cases concerning water body protection, signaling a firm commitment to safeguarding these natural assets.
The Chief Minister also revealed plans for beautifying Leishang Hiden with an allocated budget of Rs. 12 lakh, along with the approval of ¹ 86 crore for the beautification of Imphal Turel. This development is part of the state’s broader strategy to enhance environmental sustainability and promote tourism.
As part of the celebrations, the Chief Minister announced the approval of Rs. 3,300 crore for constructing cemented concrete roads across the state. This initiative aims to improve infrastructure and ensure better connectivity in the region.
The event also included a state-level symposium, a poster competition, and the Wetlands Mitra program, where participants, especially students, displayed their knowledge and commitment to wetlands conservation. The day served as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect these vital ecosystems for the well-being of future generations.
