Imphal, Oct 29:
The Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Committee (WBCC) Manipur, in collaboration with the Forest Department, has launched a campaign to address the growing issue of illegal bird trapping across various wetlands and forests in the state. This initiative comes in response to the rising number of migratory birds being captured using traps, ropes, and nets.
According to WBCC, illegal hunting methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with the use of snares, sticky traps, and fire torches to catch migratory birds during their seasonal visit. The organization warned that these practices not only threaten wildlife but also harm the delicate ecological balance of the region.
The WBCC has emphasized the need for immediate action, calling on residents to support the conservation efforts. In a statement, the organization urged citizens to report any incidents of illegal bird trapping or wildlife exploitation to ensure strict enforcement of wildlife protection laws.
General Secretary Ningthoujam Robi stated that the ongoing drive will include joint efforts between WBCC volunteers and Forest Department officials. “Our goal is to prevent wildlife exploitation and preserve biodiversity,” Robi said, adding that public participation is essential for the success of these operations.
