Kangpokpi, Aug 17:

The Blood Cell, State Health Society, National Health Mission (NHM) Manipur today organised a Voluntary Blood Donation Awareness Program in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) Kangpokpi, and Kholep Youth Club at Village Community Hall, Kholep.
In the program, Doctors and workers from the Blood Cell confute several misconceptions about blood donation and the fears that are generally attached to it. It is usually due to these misconceptions and fears that many people are reluctant to donate blood even though they are physically fit and healthy.
According to the doctors, there are 76 ml of blood per Kg of body weight for men while for women it is 66 ml of blood per Kg of body weight. For both men and women, the body’s requirement of blood is only 50 ml per Kg of body weight while the rest are surplus. Everyone who is between the age group of 18 and 65 years, whole body weight is not less than 45 Kg, Haemoglobin level not less that 12.5 gms/hundred ml and in good health can be a blood donor. In a blood donation, a donor has to donate only 350 ml of blood which is just a fraction of one’s surplus blood.
The doctors added that these surplus blood can cause several diseases in human body, and therefore also contrary to the conventional beliefs, donating blood is actually a healthier practice. Meanwhile, various other advantages of blood donation were also mentioned by the speakers of the program.
The Awareness Program was also attended by Dr. Lamtinthang Haokip, Social Worker, and representatives of the Kuki Women Union Sadar Hills (KWU-SH), Kuki Students’ Union Sadar Hills (KSO-SH), and Saitu Gamphazol Area Youth Organisation (SGAYO).
