The International Federation of Film Critics – India Chapter (FIPRESCI-India) has announced the recipient of the Satyajit Ray Memorial Award for 2025. Renowned film critic and author Pradip Biswas has been conferred with the prestigious award for his outstanding contribution to writing on cinema.
Instituted in 2021 to commemorate the birth centenary of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, the award recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to film literature in any Indian language, including English. It is presented annually on Ray’s birth anniversary, May 2.
Pradip Biswas, born in Kolkata in 1945, began his career in film journalism shortly after completing his Master’s degrees in English, Linguistics, and Journalism from the University of Calcutta. Over the decades, he has written for numerous reputed publications including The Hindustan Standard, The Telegraph, The Indian Express, The Financial Express, and Ananda Bazar Patrika, among others.
He is the author of 35 books on cinema, covering both Indian and international filmmakers. Notable titles include Buddhadeb Dasgupta: Cinema of Imprinted Times, Mrinal Sen: Iconoclast of Indian Cinema, Ray on Ray, Deepti Naval: Dreams, Memories, Reflections, and Kim Ki-duk: Times of Scarred Memories, the last of which won the best book award from the Korean Film Foundation in 2014.
Biswas was also awarded the National Film Award for Best Film Critic in 1989.
The award includes a citation and, beginning this year, a cash component of Rs. 10,000 as a token of respect. FIPRESCI-India announced that the citation will be formally presented at a physical event to be held soon.
Previous recipients of the award include Aruna Vasudev (2021), I. Shanmughadas (2022), Ashok Rane (2023), and Maithili Rao (2024).
