Imphal, Aug 13:

In a rare display of unity amidst ongoing disagreements over resolving the 15-month-long crisis, people from all walks of life in Manipur came together to pay tribute to the martyrs of the Anglo-Manipur War. Despite political and ideological differences, leaders and citizens alike honoured Yuvaraj Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General, who were hanged at Mapal Kangjeibung on this day in 1891. The day is observed as Patriot’s Day across the state.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh led the state’s solemn observance at Hijam Yaicham Pat and the Temple of Thangal General. The ceremony, marked by a gun salute from a contingent of the 1st Manipur Rifles, reflected the deep respect for the sacrifices made by these war heroes in their battle against British colonial forces.
Across the state at different locations, floral tributes were laid by members of civil society organizations, district administrations, schools, and colleges, demonstrating a shared reverence for Manipur’s historical figures. At Congress Bhavan on BT Road, Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh led a wreath-laying ceremony, paying homage not only to Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General but also to the unsung heroes who gave their lives for the state’s freedom.
The tributes come in the wake of a heated legislative session, where debates raged over finding a lasting solution to the ongoing crisis. Five of the Congress MLAs walk out expressing their dissatisfaction to the Speaker decision. Yet, in the recognition of Manipur’s martyrs, political lines blurred, and a unified front emerged. Both N. Biren Singh and Okram Ibobi Singh set aside their differences to honour the legacy of those who fought valiantly for the sovereignty of the erstwhile kingdom, reminding the state of the enduring power of its shared history.
