TSA condemns recent incidents of violence in Manipur

The Thadou Students’ Association (TSA) has strongly condemned the recent twin incidents of violence in Manipur — the shooting of a farmer in Bishnupur district and the killing of a civilian woman during a reported security operation in Churachandpur district — calling them grave violations of human rights and demanding an immediate judicial inquiry.
According to the TSA statement issued by spokesperson Vicky Thadou, the first incident occurred at Phubala, Bishnupur district, where Ningthoujam Biren Singh, a local farmer from Phubala Awang Maning Leikai, was shot and injured while working in his paddy field. The second and more alarming incident involved the alleged killing of Mrs. Hoikholhing Haokip, wife of the village chief of Langchingmanbi, Kangvai Sub-Division, Churachandpur district, during a retaliatory security operation. Mrs. Hoikholhing was reportedly shot at point-blank range, which the TSA claims could amount to a “fake encounter” if substantiated.
Expressing solidarity with the victims and their families, the TSA raised concern over the increasing militarization of civilian areas and the failure of the state administration — currently under President’s Rule since February 2025 — to ensure the safety of its citizens. The association accused the administration of inaction and said the events reflect poorly on the effectiveness of the Hon’ble Governor’s oversight and the conduct of security forces.
