Traffic along NH 37 disrupted as Makru Bridge collapses

Imphal, Feb 6: Transportation of essential commodities to the state along NH 37 under tight security escort amidst the prolong economic blockade by UNC has been put to complete halt since early morning today after portion of Makru Bridge has been collapsed.
Report reaching here said that the bridge has been already in deteriorating condition with the authority responsible for maintenance of the bridge had failed to provide its service. The BRO was the agency responsible for fixing of the bridge and also for maintenance of the road stretch along NH 37 but yesterday the Union Government had announced to hand over the maintenance and construction work of the High Way to National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited .
Since the UNC called the economic blockade along the 2 national highways the state government has been ferrying essential commodities including fuel along the NH 37 using large number of security forces. After the condition of the Makru Bridge has been deteriorated and the BRO had allowed crossing of only specific number of loaded trucks, the security forces has been escorting only 300 loaded trucks per day. As the fuel trucks are transported in limited numbers people of the state are facing extreme problem in getting fuel.
But as the Bridge has been collapsed ferrying of loaded trucks had been put to complete halt and it is expected that people of the state may once more face scarcity of fuel as well as other essential commodities.
