Sword Vashum elected as 42nd President of TNL

In a landmark event, Sword Vashum has been elected as the 42nd President of Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) for the 2024-2028 term. The prestigious election, held at the TNL conference hall in Ukhrul, attracted over 260 village representatives from the region.
Sword Vashum, a retired Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General of India (IAAS), emerged victorious in a closely contested four-way race. Born on October 1, 1949, in Talui village, Vashum’s career began in 1975 with the Indian Audit & Accounts Service. He retired as Additional Deputy Comptroller & Auditor General in New Delhi.
Renowned for his integrity, Vashum’s vision includes comprehensive development and unity among Naga tribes, upholding Naga identity and collective progress. His election is seen as a wise choice, expected to guide the organization toward regional and socio-political prominence.
Upon his victory, Vashum expressed gratitude and emphasized his commitment to serving the Tangkhul Naga people. “I will always need your prayers and support. God will be my strength and inspiration,” he stated. He assured unity and collective effort, saying, “We are one. I will work for the betterment of the entire community.”
The TNL electoral process saw robust participation, with 660 out of 731 eligible electors casting votes. Vashum secured 277 votes, while his closest rival, Yangmi Kapai, garnered 234. This outcome highlights TNL’s democratic vigor.
An octogenarian TNL voter expressed confidence in Vashum’s leadership during these tumultuous times, “He will be an inspiration and guide to the younger generation.”
