Imphal, July 30:
Six student organizations in Manipur have issued a joint statement condemning the appointment of bureaucrats to key positions at Manipur Technical University (MTU) and Manipur University of Culture (MUC), asserting that these appointments are detrimental to higher education in the state.
The groups—Manipur Students Federation (MSF), Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students Association (KSA), Students Union of Kangleipak (SUK), Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS), and another student body—argued that the positions of Vice Chancellor and Registrar are currently held by individuals from the state’s bureaucratic offices rather than by qualified academicians.
In their release, the student bodies highlighted that the Vice Chancellor of MTU lacks essential qualifications and does not come from a professional academic background. They further pointed out that Commissioner of Higher Education, H. Gyanprakash, and Registrar, MOBC Director Ng. Bhogen, also come from bureaucratic backgrounds. The organizations claim that these appointments have contributed to the failures at MTU.
The student bodies also noted that the Registrar of MUC is concurrently serving in the Directorate of Planning and Implementation and holds a joint secretary position in the DP department. According to the students, such dual roles and the appointment of bureaucrats to academic positions undermine the universities’ functionality and academic integrity.
In their joint statement, the student bodies appealed to the state government to appoint qualified and regular teachers to the positions of Vice Chancellor and Registrar at MTU and the Registrar at MUC as soon as possible. They emphasized their commitment to resisting any government actions that threaten the education sector in the state.
The student groups called for immediate action to rectify the situation and ensure that qualified academicians lead these universities.
