SSUM demands action over alleged harassment of female student by flying squad at Manipur University

The Socialist Students’ Union of Manipur (SSUM) has raised serious concerns over an incident that occurred during the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) 2nd Semester Examination held on July 4, 2025, at Manipur University, in which a female student was allegedly subjected to humiliating treatment by the flying squad.
In a press statement issued today, SSUM alleged that a female examinee, was physical check by male flying squad, allegedly in the name of examination protocol. The incident took place in front of others, causing emotional distress to the student, and the Union strongly condemned what it called an act of harassment and violation of basic dignity.
SSUM President S. Yaima Meetei questioned the necessity and appropriateness of such checking methods and said that this kind of conduct shows a complete lack of ethical responsibility on the part of the invigilators. He stressed that the involvement of male staff in checking a female student, especially in a sensitive area such as clothing, is unacceptable and demands immediate attention.
The Union further criticised the university authorities for their silence and failure to take action despite the severity of the incident. It demanded to know why the university administration has not yet initiated an inquiry into the matter. SSUM also questioned the role of women’s organisations and expressed disappointment over their silence on the issue, calling upon them to stand up for the rights and dignity of women.
Calling the act a serious violation of examination ethics and human decency, SSUM urged the Dean of Students’ Welfare and the Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University to take swift and appropriate action. The Union demanded a thorough investigation, disciplinary action against those responsible, and assurance that such incidents do not recur.
SSUM concluded by warning that if the university fails to act promptly, it will be forced to intensify its agitation and seek justice through public protest and legal avenues.
