Imphal, Oct 25:
The Speaker’s Tribunal of the Manipur Legislative Assembly has resumed hearings on the disqualification cases involving five JD(U) MLAs who recently defected to the BJP. The MLAs in question are Kh. Joykisan Singh, Ngursanglur Sanate, Md. Achab Uddin, Thangjam Arunkumar, and L.M. Khaute.
These petitions, initiated by petitioner Hareshwar Goshwami and represented by Lead Counsel N. Bupenda Meitei, aim to expedite the proceedings in accordance with a Supreme Court directive requiring resolutions within three months of filing. Meitei emphasized the need for timely rulings and requested daily proceedings.
Additionally, he sought to amend the filing date to 2022, arguing that the petitions were submitted two years earlier than indicated. Advocate Ajoy Pebam represented the petitioners in Disqualification Cases No. 6 and 7, concerning MLAs M. Dorendro Singh and M. Surjit Singh.
Senior Advocate L. Anand Singh, alongside junior associates from Senior Advocate R.S. Reisang’s team, represented the respondents. During the hearing, the respondents’ counsel requested a three-to-four-week period to prepare their responses, while the petitioners’ counsel insisted on an expedited schedule. The Speaker’s Tribunal ultimately granted the respondents three weeks to respond and scheduled the next hearing accordingly.
