SOREPA calls for general strike on October 15 to protest 1949 annexation of Manipur

Imphal, Oct 11:

The proscribed group Socialist Revolutionary Party (SOREPA) Kangleipak has announced a 12-hour general strike on October 15, 2024, from 5 AM to 5 PM, in protest of the forced annexation of Manipur into the Indian Union. The strike commemorates the 75th anniversary of the 1949 event, which SOREPA claims remains a painful historical moment for the people of Manipur.
In a statement issued by MC Yaiphaba, Secretary of Publicity and Organization of SOREPA, the group clarified that essential services such as medical services, media, rituals, and fire services would be exempted from the strike. The statement further mentioned that SOREPA would support any similar strikes or boycotts called by other organizations in the Western Southeast Asia (WESEA) region on that day.
According to the group, the annexation of Manipur occurred when the then King of Manipur was coerced into signing an agreement under extreme pressure on October 15, 1949. The statement emphasized that this event, witnessed by many, remains an enduring grievance for the people of Manipur and the broader WESEA region. SOREPA described the annexation as an extension of colonial oppression by external forces and a major source of discontent.
SOREPA’s statement also touched on wider issues in the region, highlighting that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), viewed as a colonial tool, continues to suppress the people of Kangleipak/Manipur and the WESEA region. The group accused India of using AFSPA to prevent self-determination and suppress rising consciousness among the people of the region, who increasingly recognize the occupation of their lands.
The statement further alleged that Indian forces, along with mercenaries, are responsible for widespread atrocities, including killings and disappearances. It also claimed that Chin-Kuki mercenaries, allegedly supported by India, have been involved in violent acts that threaten the future of Manipur. The group expressed solidarity with ongoing protests against AFSPA, pointing out that brave women in the region have long demanded its repeal, only to be met with continued oppression.
SOREPA warned that India is manipulating the narrative about the resistance movement in Manipur, portraying revolutionary efforts as terrorism. The group also accused Indian forces of deploying advanced military technology, including drones and missiles, to carry out attacks while suppressing media coverage of these actions.
The armed group urged the people of Manipur to reject India’s colonial narrative, calling for unity in the fight for self-determination.
