RNCM opposes oil exploration in Zeilad Wildlife Sanctuary

Imphal, Oct 19:

The Rongmei Naga Council Manipur (RNCM) has issued a strong statement condemning proposed oil exploration activities in the Zeilad Wildlife Sanctuary, particularly in zones D2 and D3. The RNCM urged the public and all stakeholders to reject the project, citing concerns over potential violations of indigenous rights and environmental degradation.
In its statement, the RNCM criticized the involvement of certain entrepreneurs, activists, and government officials who allegedly promote the project in collaboration with government agencies. The council argued that these efforts run counter to public interest and infringe upon the constitutional rights of the Rongmei Naga tribe, protected under Article 371(c) of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees indigenous property rights to tribal hill communities in Manipur.
The RNCM emphasized that the wealth within the Zeilad Wildlife Sanctuary belongs to the Rongmei people and should not be exploited through policy manipulations or constitutional amendments. It urged the Rongmei community to resist these developments and safeguard their territorial integrity and cultural heritage, which their ancestors have preserved for generations.
The council further warned individuals and groups to avoid actions that could be considered treasonous to the tribe and the broader community. It called for unity in opposing the project and protecting the land for future generations.
The RNCM concluded by appealing to all concerned parties to respect the sentiments of the Rongmei people and work towards preserving their heritage and resources for the benefit of future generations.
