Imphal, July 27:
The Private School Development Council (PSDC), a member of the Coordinating Committee on Education Free Demand, has staged a protest against rampant monetary demand targeting schools. The protest, which began on Thursday, has seen participation from educators and concerned citizens.
Sumati Sougrakpam, General Secretary of the All Manipur Student Guardian Organization and a member of the Coordinating Committee, stated, “Since the 25th, we have been protesting. It has been three days. There is rampant extortion. Those who are extorting money are asking for the number of students. Even students are being asked to contribute money too.”
Salam Jotin, General Secretary of PSDC, said, “Around 30-40 schools in the Thoubal area are participating in this protest. There is also a protest in Kakching District.”
The protests have taken place in Thoubal District, with demonstrators gathering at Yairipok Market. Students and teachers of Model Academy in Yairipok have voiced their concerns about the impact of these extortion demands on the education system.
“Education should take place for at least 220 days in a year, and students should be able to attend school without fear,” stated a protester from Model Academy.
In addition to the school protests, staff from ZEO Zone 3 also participated, holding their demonstration at Thoubal Athokpam Keithel. The protests highlight the community’s determination to combat extortion and ensure a stable educational environment for their children.
