Peace campaign by Malem Thongam faces obstruction by Manipur Government

Peace campaign undertaken by social activist and peace cyclist Malem Thongam reportedly faced obstruction from authorities in Manipur in Chandel district.
The campaign, titled “Cycling for Peace in Manipur,” began on the 12th of this month from Lamangdong Keithel in Bishnupur district. The ride was flagged off by several local women, including Meira Paibi groups, as Malem Thongam started his solo peace cycling expedition to promote harmony in the state.
On the fourth day of the journey, Malem Thongam reached Japhou Bazar in Chandel district headquarters, where members of the local bazar board and people from different communities warmly received him.
However, while he was preparing to continue his peace campaign activities in the area, a team led by the Officer-in-Charge of Chandel Police Station reportedly intervened. The team informed him that he would not be allowed to carry out any campaign-related activities in the district. He was also told that he could neither stay overnight in the area nor proceed further towards Churachandpur district.
Following discussions between the two sides, Malem Thongam returned from the location and later halted at Pallel for the night.
Speaking on the development, Malem Thongam stated that the restrictions imposed on his peace ride reflect the prevailing situation in the state and added that he currently has no plan to proceed with the ride towards Churachandpur.
