NPP MLAs skip crucial meeting, uncertainty looms over support to BJP

Imphal, Oct 9:

Something seems not right within the National People’s Party (NPP) in Manipur as a potential rift emerges between the party leadership and its seven elected MLAs. The discord became apparent when none of the MLAs attended a key state executive meeting at the party’s Naoremthong office in Imphal, raising questions about the party’s unity and its stance on continuing to support the BJP-led government in the state.
The situation stems from the NPP state executive meeting held on September 27 in Guwahati, chaired by National President Conrad K. Sangma. During this meeting, it was resolved that the party would convene a National Executive Meeting in New Delhi on October 5 to decide whether to continue backing the BJP or withdraw its support. However, the meeting was later postponed, with Conrad Sangma himself announcing the delay, leaving the Manipur unit uncertain about the party’s next steps.
In response to the postponement, the NPP Manipur state executive met again today at the Naoremthong headquarters to address key issues, including the party’s position regarding the BJP. The meeting, organized by the State Party President, saw the attendance of senior figures such as NPP National Vice President Yumnam Joykumar, former ministers Y. Irabot and N. Mangi, former MLA S. Sobhachandra, and other senior state executive members. However, the absence of the seven MLAs, including key legislators in the Manipur Legislative Assembly, raised concerns among party members.
The state executive members expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of clarity regarding the postponed October 5 National Executive Meeting. During discussions, they resolved to request the national leadership to clarify the reasons behind the postponement and to provide a revised date for the meeting. The absence of the MLAs further fueled speculation about possible internal disagreements, especially regarding the party’s alliance with the BJP.
Party insiders suggest that the growing differences could be tied to the NPP’s ongoing dilemma over its relationship with the BJP. The NPP has been an ally of the BJP in Manipur, but recent political developments and the state’s handling of critical issues have reportedly caused friction within the party. As a result, questions linger about the future of the alliance and the role of NPP legislators in shaping the party’s strategy moving forward.
As the party navigates this period of internal turmoil, its decision on whether to continue supporting the BJP remains a key point of discussion. The absence of the MLAs at today’s meeting has only heightened the sense of uncertainty, with party leaders expressing concerns about the direction the NPP will take in the coming weeks.
The next steps for the NPP are expected to be clarified during the rescheduled National Executive Meeting. However, the ongoing absence of the party’s MLAs from crucial discussions may further exacerbate tensions, leaving the future of the party’s leadership and its role in Manipur’s political landscape uncertain.
