Imphal, Jan 14:

Normal life in Manipur was severely disrupted as hundreds of commuters faced significant hardships due to the observance of the 36th Drivers’ Day at the Manipur Press Club on Tuesday. The event led to a partial road blockade, effectively cutting off the state from the rest of the country.
The day-long commemoration saw drivers across the state participating by offering floral tributes to the photos of their colleagues who had lost their lives while serving the public. The observance honored the sacrifices of the drivers, with special recognition for elderly drivers and the families of those who died in the line of duty, who were presented with monetary assistance and mementos.
Maibam Anil Meitei, Secretary General of the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers’ Union, shared that 314 registered drivers have lost their lives in various accidents since the observance began in 1990. He noted that most of these fatalities occurred while drivers were serving on the state’s vital roadways, NH-37 and NH-102, which are crucial lifelines for Manipur.
The commemoration was jointly observed by several organizations, including the Manipur Drivers’ Association (MDA), Highway Truck Owners’ Organisation, Senapati District Truck Drivers’ Union, Senapati District Truck Owners Association (SDTOA), All Manipur Gorkha Truck Drivers’ and Owners’ Association, and All Manipur Petroleum Tanker Drivers’ Union (AMPTDU).
During the event, Anil Meitei appealed to the state government to extend support to the drivers who are currently facing hardship due to the ongoing communal violence in Manipur, highlighting their vulnerability and need for assistance during these challenging times.
