New Hope for Displaced Families: Housing complex unveiled in violence-hit Manipur

Imphal, Oct 25:

Manipur government has opened the doors of a newly constructed housing complex in Langol, offering shelter to 120 families who have been displaced from their homes. Nestled on a hillock north of Imphal, this complex is set to provide refuge for around 460 individuals who fled the turmoil in areas such as Moreh, Churachandpur and Phoubakchao.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh shared the news via a post on X, expressing the government’s unwavering commitment to the rehabilitation of those affected. “The newly built alternative housing complex at the National Games Village, Langol, now stands as a beacon of hope for 120 families who have endured the hardships of displacement,” he stated. “Our government remains devoted to ensuring the well-being and support of every displaced family.”
The Chief Minister’s announcement comes amid ongoing efforts to address the needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have found temporary refuge in school and college campuses since the onset of violence in May 2023. He further elaborated on the government’s ambitious plan to construct over 7,600 temporary houses for these families, a project that has received the green light from the Centre.
Among the planned homes, the majority—1,813—will rise in Kangpokpi district, with significant numbers also designated for Churachandpur (1,331), Kakching (1,217), and Bishnupur (1,015). Singh expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other key figures in the Central government for their support in these recovery efforts.
The violence that erupted in May 2023 has claimed over 220 lives and displaced nearly 50,000 individuals, primarily from the Kuki tribes in border towns like Moreh and hill districts like Churachandpur, as well as the Meitei community in the Imphal valley. The clashes stem from a deep-rooted conflict over land rights and political representation, with the Kuki tribes seeking a separate administrative entity while the Meiteis push for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes category.
As tensions simmer, several Kuki-Zo insurgent groups, including the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum and the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), have united in their demand for a distinct administrative structure, reflecting the complexities of the ongoing strife. Meanwhile, Rijiju announced plans for a world-class football field in Manipur, reinforcing the state’s identity as a sports powerhouse.
