New Delhi, May 6:
The North East Students’ Organization (NESO), representing student bodies across the eight northeastern states, has submitted a strong memorandum to the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), demanding urgent intervention in what it calls a “violation of justice and transparency” in the recent allotment process of Barak Hostel at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
In the representation, NESO expressed deep concern over the First Allotment List released on April 8, 2025, alleging that it failed to reserve 75% of hostel seats for students from the North East, contrary to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between JNU, the North Eastern Council (NEC), and the Ministry of DoNER. Barak Hostel, NESO said, was established as a result of long-standing demands to address the marginalization of students from the region in mainland academic institutions.
The organization has demanded an immediate rollback of the allotment list and called for the first round of allotments to be limited to one-fifth of total seats until a fair and inclusive process is implemented. NESO also urged the public release of the MoU and related documents for transparency and demanded a written assurance from JNU that the original mandate prioritizing North East students would be upheld.
Furthermore, NESO reiterated its support for the North East Students’ Forum (NESF), JNU, and called for the official recognition of NESF as the legitimate representative body of North East students on all matters concerning Barak Hostel.
Terming the current process as “institutional betrayal,” NESO warned that it would escalate the matter to higher forums if immediate corrective measures were not taken. The organization emphasized that symbolic representation without real inclusion would not be tolerated.
