The Department of Physical Education and Sports Science (PESS), Manipur University, in collaboration with the Fit India Campaign Committee, Fit India Club, and the National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, today organized the Nationwide Celebration of Sports, Spirit & Unity on National Sports Day at Dr. Kamal Indoor Stadium, Manipur University, Canchipur. The programme was held under the national theme “Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein” launched by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
The event, which began at 10:00 a.m., paid floral tribute to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, followed by activities involving students, faculty members, scholars, and volunteers.
The programme was graced by Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, as Chief Guest; Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh, Chairman of FICC & Dean of Students’ Welfare, as Special Guest; Dr. Ch. Pradip Singh, Assistant Director of Sports, MU, as Guest of Honour; and Prof. L. Thambal Singh, Head of PESS, as President of the function.
In his welcome address, Dr. Laishram Santosh Singh, Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell and FICC & FIC, MU, highlighted the role of youth participation in sports in shaping a healthy, disciplined, and forward-looking society.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. M. Nodiachand Singh stressed the importance of celebrating sports in a country like India, where immense untapped potential exists. He underlined Manipur’s proud legacy of producing sportspersons who have brought national and international acclaim, inspiring future generations.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra Singh emphasized the transformative power of sports in channelizing youthful energy towards a peaceful and united society. He pointed out that the celebration of National Sports Day aligns with the Fit India Movement and the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh reiterated the holistic benefits of sports in societal development, while Dr. Ch. Pradip Singh commended Manipur University’s contributions in the field of sports. Prof. L. Thambal Singh underlined the unifying spirit of sports and its role in fostering discipline and community cohesion.
As part of the celebration, a voluntary blood donation camp was also organized, with active participation from PESS students, NSS volunteers, and staff from various departments. A total of 30 units of blood were donated, reflecting the spirit of service and solidarity.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. L. Pungdeng, Department of PESS. The celebration stood as a strong message of sportsmanship, unity, national pride, and the enduring spirit of National Sports Day.
