MPCC questions exclusion of Manipuri as classical language; condemns arms looting incident in Ukhrul

Imphal, Oct 4:

Former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has voiced his disapproval of the exclusion of Manipuri from the list of classical languages of India, calling on authorities to clarify the reasons behind this decision. Other Congress MLAs from the state also strongly reacted to the decision.
While acknowledging the addition of five other languages to the classical category, Ibobi expressed disappointment that Manipuri did not receive similar recognition. He stated that the Manipuri language fulfills all necessary criteria for classical status, citing its unique script and rich historical background.
Former CM Ibobi Singh urged the relevant authorities to provide an explanation for the lack of recognition of Manipuri as a classical language, warning that the state would view this as a complete betrayal if the language indeed meets the required standards.
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has strongly condemned the recent alleged looting of arms from Ukhrul Police Station during a clash between two villages over a land dispute. The MPCC has called for an enquiry into the incident.
MPCC President Keisham Meghachandra Singh speaking to media persons in a press conference said, “October 2, observed as the International Day of Non-Violence, witnessed an unfortunate incident in Ukhrul District, Manipur. The incident of arms looting have become a trend during violent outbreaks and weapons looted from police stations, appear to be applied rather than being stolen. The Ukhrul violence is a clear example of the state Home Department’s failure.”
He raised concerns about the number of weapons currently held in state police stations, given the frequency of such lootings. Megchachandra also pointed out that district authorities were aware of the potential for clashes but failed to act to prevent them, urging the state government to take accountability for the situation.
Megchandra appealed to the Tangkhul community in the district to work towards restoring peace and harmony.
