MPCC President K. Meghachandra slams BJP; Demands fresh Assembly Elections

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K. Meghachandra has launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led government at the center and BJP MLAs of Manipur, calling for the dissolution of the Manipur Assembly and the holding of fresh elections to resolve the ongoing crises in the state.
Addressing a press conference held at Congress Bhavan here in Imphal today, Meghachandra spoke at length about the significance of June 25, 1975, when the Emergency was imposed in India. He expressed confusion on how it was labeled the Black Day and shown as a deliberate attempt to malign that period despite parliamentary support at the time.
Shifting focus to current issues, Meghachandra alleged that India today, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rule, resembles an undeclared national emergency, marked by rising violence, suppression of free speech, and attacks on press freedom. Referring to recent incidents in Manipur, he cited examples of journalists being arrested for speaking against the BJP, calling it a clear attempt to silence dissent.
He said the Sangbidhan Bachao (Save the Constitution) Movement had emerged to expose the dark side of the BJP and lamented that, from fear and oppression, June 25 started to be referred to as a Black Day.
Meghachandra criticized the Modi government for failing to deliver on its promises, including those related to employment, and accused the BJP of misleading the public. He expressed dismay that the Prime Minister focuses on electoral gains rather than addressing the ongoing violence and hardships faced by citizens across the country.
Highlighting Manipur’s situation, he said the state continues to suffer from violence, floods, and a deepening financial crisis. He credited the recent victory of Akoijam Bimol to the failure of BJP MLAs to speak up in Parliament about Manipur’s crisis, alleging that they have been silenced by the central leadership.
In a direct challenge to the BJP, Meghachandra demanded the immediate dissolution of the current Manipur Assembly which is under animated suspension and called for fresh elections, asserting that the ruling party has failed to restore peace even after two years. He concluded by questioning the BJP’s unfulfilled promises and said that under the current regime, it feels as if the people of India no longer have any rights.
