Imphal, Jan 14:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) today strongly criticized Minister Govindas Konthoujam over his recent remark at the Gaan Ngai Festival in Chinikon village, Kangpokpi district, where he accused the Congress party of wanting to prolong the ongoing crisis in Manipur.
Responding to the minister’s statement, MPCC Vice President Hareshwar Goshwami, during a press briefing at Congress Bhavan in Imphal, refuted the claim and alleged that it was the BJP government, both at the state and central levels, that was failing to find a solution to the crisis.
Goshwami stated that at the onset of the crisis, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader had reached out to the Chief Minister via phone, suggesting a joint meeting to address the seriousness of the situation. He further pointed out that during an assembly session, the five Congress MLAs had urged the ruling BJP to discuss the issue, but their requests were ignored, leading to a walkout by the Congress MLAs.
“The BJP government has shown no intent to find a way forward. Instead, their leaders continue to present conflicting narratives about the root of the crisis,” Goshwami said. He highlighted recent remarks by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who labeled the situation in Manipur as a communal crisis, contradicting earlier statements that attributed the issue to court directives regarding Scheduled Tribe (ST) demands.
The MPCC leader also criticized the state government for failing to address the plight of the displaced population, with over 60,000 people rendered homeless due to the destruction and vandalization of their houses.
Goshwami concluded by emphasizing the need for concrete action and accountability from the BJP-led governments at both state and central levels to resolve the crisis.
